I know many people, especially her fans, want to see Elizabeth Warren appointed as Biden's Secretary of the Treasury. Although I am very critical of Warren I do understand why people think this is a good idea, despite how Biden is likely to ice her out of the cabinet.
But I have said this before and I will say it again, and again, until someone listens; I don't think Biden should pick Warren to be the next treasurer. I think she should be the next Secretary of Education.
Some of you might be a little confused that I am suggesting Warren be given any job because those who read this blog know I have been very critical of Warren, sometimes I've even been too harsh. But while I am critical I am not so up my own ass that I cannot give credit where credit is due, and that goes for anyone no matter what their politics.
So while I am critical I can concede that Warren is a great outside agitator, but she I think she is a terrible regulator. Her fans insist that her creating the Consumer Protections Bureau demonstrates her ability to regulate Wall Street. However I think what happened to the CPB proves the exact opposite.
The reason Warren is a bad regulator is because while she has a fairly pro working class platform, which is good for agitation, she is in fact still a capitalist and she is banking on the idea that other capitalists will respect regulations. Her regulations hinder on the idea that "ethical capitalism" is possible. I think the last four years show that when it comes to class and power the powerful never play fair. This does not mean we shouldn't regulate Wall Street, but we should not expect capitalists to ever play fair or respect the rule of law.
However, Warren does a phenomenal job at outside agitation. I remember Occupy and how she was speaking to our concerns in a very real way and how she helped mount pressure on Obama and Congress to both improve and pass the weak spots in the Dodd-Frank Bill.
Before Warren got elected to the senate she did great work holding Obama's administration accountable, but once elected to the senate we saw what we often see happen to well intention progressives when they get elected; we see progressives water down their positions and compromise with the opposition. This is what happened with the CPB.
The CPB is a great idea, or it would be if it had actual regulatory powers, which I know Warren envisioned it having. But what happened, thanks to compromise with Obama and the Wall Street Democrats, the CPB became nothing but yet another ineffective bureaucracy that validated right-wing fodder about Obama, "expanding the federal government."
The CPB ended up just assuming tasks regarding oversight and regulation that were already being handled by the Security and Exchanges Commission and other regulatory bodies. No new regulations were put into place and as such the CPB is a flop.
This however does not mean that Warren has nothing to offer. Quite the contrary, while I was harsh on Warren during the primary I will admit that her educational platform, which included universal childcare, was phenomenal. Warren has teaching experience from grade school up to college. Plus her education platform was had a strict anti racist tier. Her platform, teaching experience, and her tenure as an outside agitator make her a perfect choice the position once held by trust fund brat Betsy Devos.
Considering the weakness of the CPB but the strength of her educational platform, I think Warren should be the next Secretary of Education.
