5 Local Running Getaways

On vacation this week? Here's a few spots close to Raleigh to check out! Got a local favorite run that's off the beaten path that we may be unfamiliar with? Send us a message or comment below!

1. Bass Lake - 900 Bass Lake Road, Holly Springs, NC 27540

  • Looking for the softest trails around? Look no further than Bass Lake. There's a nice ~2 mile woodchip loop around the lake, plus some easy trails off the backside. A great spot for your recovery days.

2. Raven Rock Mountain Bike Trails - 778 Moccasin Branch Road, Lillington, NC 27546

  • Don't be fooled by the "Mountain Bike" in the name, these new trails are built for running. The main loop is 6.6 miles and is marked every 0.1 mile, so you won't get off track. There are a few side trails that will allow you to get up to 11 miles in without doubling back.

3. Pittsboro Dirt Roads - 690 Jay Shambley Rd, Pittsboro, NC 27312

  • A little further out of town, but worth the drive. The pavement ends at the address above, just before the gravel starts. Go about 2.5 miles before running into a road. Take a left and run about 1/4 mile before turning right onto Carolina Hill (Gravel) Road for another 2.5 miles of gravel. A nice 10.5 mile out and back that's reminiscent of Nederland, Colorado's Magnolia Road.
  • Check out a video from this run on a previous Patrons Only post.

4. Williamson Preserve - 4409 Mial Plantation Rd, Raleigh, NC 27610

  • The most recent addition to the Triangle Trail scene! The Williamson Preserve is a beautiful place for a run up to around 7.5 miles if you do the entire loop. Stay left at the first crossing to get onto the big "crazy 8's" style loop. Very runnable (or bikable)!
  • Check out a video from this run on a previous Patrons Only post.

5. Carolina North Forest - Municipal Drive, Chapel Hill, NC 27516

  • A hidden gem in Chapel Hill, Carolina North Forest has been home to runners from UNC and Chapel Hill High for years. Turn onto Municipal Drive off MLK and drive until you see the gravel path. Park there or drive on the gravel until you get to the true parking lot. The most popular loop is the ~2.5 mile Pumpkin Loop that is a nice rolling loop that's great for easy runs or harder efforts.
