Episode 13 - Dren McDonald (Gathering Sky, Dangerous Dave), Patron of the Week
Hello!

This week, we're unveiling our "Patron of the Week" segment, and featuring composer Dren McDonald.

Dren is fabulous. He's worked on more than 60 games either as composer, audio director or sound designer. Or more! He does it all.

In the late 80s, Dren's pal, legendary game designer John Romero, made a game called Dangerous Dave in the Deserted Pirate's Hideout. It was a big hit. It didn't have music though, so when John told Dren he was rebooting the game in 2015, Dren offered to write some music.

It's so good. And I've said too much. Listen to him tell the story!

Our Patron of the Week segment highlights those of you who support us here on Patreon at the $5 a month level. Those patrons supply us with a list of five of their favorite video game tunes/pieces. Once we get that list, Sam and I choose two of them, and interview that patron about those songs. It's been a blast to speak with you in this manner, and connect on which music inspires you the most.

So! This week, you'll hear from Stephen Froeber. Stephen lives in Germany, and is a composer himself. Here is his full list of choices:

1) "Stardust Speedway - Good Future" by Spencer Nilsen, from the U.S. Version of Sonic the Hedgehog CD (1993)

2) "Apotheosis" by Austin Wintory from Journey

3) "Bynn the Breaker" by Darren Korb from Bastion

4) "Fogger" by Frank Klepacki from Command & Conquer: Red Alert

5) "Freya's Theme" by Nobuo Uematsu from Final Fantasy IX

We spoke about Sonic and C&C, and it was great to speak with Stephen. More to come next week with another Patron of the Week!

Be well, friends.
