Today I am taking you to Dover Castle, circa 1400 when kings were the highest accolade you can get, but you know your life expectancy was probably detrmined by whether you were like ehough or not. This is a picture I took in Dover Castle in 2013 and the space was set up as if there was going to be a banquet for the king.
This image jumped out to me because it is a reconstruction of a time from long ago through the vision of a modern human. I keep on saying this "modern human" is because we are modern humans, many have removed themselves so much from the old knowledge (including history) that we have very little to do with olden times. Why am I saying this, you ask. Well, do you have any idea where your bacon came from? Do you know where your potatoes came from? Do you know what type of potatoes the fast food place you like going to is using? Do you know who grew those potatoes? Do you know who made the sweate pants you are currently wearing as you read this? (sorry i over generalise, maybe not spweat pants, maybe your jeans, maybe your tracky bottoms, maybe your PJs). What I am trying to get you to consider that as humans we have evolved so much that we are no longer in touch with much of the things around us. We accumulate stuff but we do not know who made it and what they had to go through for you to have the nice stuff you have.
So why the title history? Well, we all have a history. And we have touched on this many times in the past (see - history), where do you come from? Yeah well, if you are of a certain age I don't have to explain biology to you, takes two type of cells to create a human, but I digress. My point is do you know your ancestry? Do you know your history? Do you know who your people were? Are you ok with your own history? You know from birth until now? Do you remember the important events that shaped your life? Do you want to remember? Do you know what created you from zero to hero?
If you do not know who your people are, genetically speaking, than how do you know who you are? Do you know why your pinky on your left foot is crooked? Do you know why spiders freak you out? Do you know why you only buy a certain product? Do you know why you should not walk under ladders? Do you know why red is the colour of love?
So in today's post I want you to consider what made you the person you are today? Where do your beliefs come from? What do you accept as is without question, and yet you do not know it's origin?
One of the activities I aske some of my clients is to take a large piece of paper and put 0 at one end of the paper and whatever age they are now at the other end and draw a line between those ponts, and then I ask them to note important events in their lives, that made them the people they are today. And this way they create the story of their lives, and once they are consciously aware of their own story, then the question arises, is this the story you would want to continue, or is there room for change?
History is not just a collection of events that we can not change; history is a way of us tracking through time the changes around us. History is also about learning and evolving. And now that you read all this is already history, but then my next challange to you is, how will the rest of history be written??
Are you the sum of your history or the collection of future past?
