The Aiming Circle has long recommended three premier literary markets—on-line and print contests, anthologies, and journals that regularly feature the best military-themed poetry, prose, non-fiction, essays, reviews, and art. And they do so with a high degree of literary citizenship and editorial ethics. We're about to add another to that list.
Aiming Circle members will recognize The Wrath-Bearing Tree as a regular target on our exclusive list of literary markets. It is published on the first Monday of each month. In March 2021, the non-profit publication celebrated its 50th issue. To our knowledge, no other mil-focused literary publication has achieved a similar record of quantity and quality.
The on-line journal was founded in 2015 by U.S. Army veteran Aiden Bonenberger and others. The publication's name notably refers to the poem "Gerontion," by T.S. Elliot. The Wrath-Bearing Tree's mission statement reads:
Established by combat veterans and maintained by a diverse board of veterans, military spouses, and writers compelled by themes of social justice and human resilience, The Wrath-Bearing Tree publishes essays, reviews, fiction, and poetry on military, economic, and social violence written by those who have experienced military, economic, and social violence or their consequences. We do not often draw lines in the sand, but when we do, we typically put ourselves to the left of that line. We despise kitsch, propaganda, and state-sanctioned murder. To our credit, we have not given up on the human race.
