#160: The Color of Water: Mommy- #3 in a Series of Secondary Students' Lessons on Writing and Reading Comprehension

Miss Augusta's Collection index at the Patreon Subscriber's Site Map webpage.

Augusta refers us back to video #158 where she introduced this series of videos with lessons on writing and thinking skills. Students’ engagement and interest in these literacy skills lessons is activated by reading about and comparing experiences in the lives of two black men as detailed in their very popular autobiographical/biographical books: The Color of Water: A Black Man’s Tribute to His White Mother by James McBride and The Autobiography of Malcolm X.

The focus for today’s video is an excerpt from The Color… It’s McBride’s description of his mother’s grieving her husband’s (McBride’s step-father) death and facing the challenges of raising so many children alone.

The excerpt includes McBride’s thoughts and feelings related to his mother’s mourning and his own emotions and extreme actions during that time.

Augusta will refer back to this excerpt in a later video when she asks students to compare it to a passage in the Autobiography of Malcolm X  describing his mother’s thoughts and actions after his father’s sudden death.

Attached is the text that is on Augusta’s chart in the video.
