Summary
As Augusta continues her focus on The Autobiography of Malcolm X and The Color of Water, the combined biography and autobiography of author James McBride, she guides students in noticing and identifying examples of excellent writing skills in each book.
Would these books have been best sellers if the writing skills had not been excellent? What are some of the features of the writing that are exemplary? What are some features of the writing that help readers form pictures in their minds?
In this video, she again uses an excerpt from The Color of Water from Chapter. McBride is describing his mother’s life in the months after his stepfather died. The objective of this lesson plan is to lead students in meeting various writing standards by examining the skills of excellent writers such as the use of descriptive language in The Color of Water.
