The first thing I remember seeing was the ceiling. I was lying in a bed. I had no idea where I was or how I got there. I got up and looked out the window. It appeared I was in a city somewhere. My guess would have been I was on the 8th or 9thfloor of a building. As I looked around it appeared that I was in a fully furnished apartment but didn’t remember living there or any of the furniture. In fact, I didn’t remember much of anything.
I walked into the small kitchen. I noticed the countertop was completely clear except for an ID badge that sat in the middle. I picked it up. It had the name Aaron Wells with my picture on it.
“I guess my name is Aaron.” I mumbled to myself as I became increasingly confused as to what the hell was happening.
After using the bathroom, I walked over to another window to see if I could identify where I was. This is when I started to freak out. I couldn’t think of any names of any cities to even consider.
“What the hell is wrong with me?” I said as I put my left hand onto my head. I desperately tried to find something along the street below that I could identify with, but there was nothing. In that moment, I needed help. Something wasn’t right.
I went looking for a phone. Strangely, I knew what that was. There was a phone in the bedroom by the bed. I quickly went to it and picked it up, but then drew a blank. I didn’t know who to call for help. I was now becoming frightened, I slowly put the phone back down and took a seat on the bed, still in my underwear.
“Where am I? What is happening?” I asked myself.
I laid back in bed thinking maybe if I just laid down a little my memory would come back. After about ten minutes it didn’t. I was really started to get scared at this point.
Then suddenly I heard a noise of sirens from outside. It startled me and I jumped up out of the bed. I looked out the window to see what it was. A black van had pulled up outside of the building across the street. They were bringing a person out of the building and putting them into the van. It freaked me out and I didn’t know why. I kept trying to get myself to calm down.
I started to pace by the window and watch as the black van drove away. I looked over at the door in the living room. Somehow, I knew that was the exit.
“I have to leave here. I have to get help. Something isn’t right.” I said under my breath as I continued to pace.
I went back into the bedroom and pulled out some clothes and quickly got dressed. As more time passed, the more anxious I became.
Once I was dressed, I made my way to the door in the living room. I took a deep breath and opened it. Outside there was a hallway. I went out and closed the door behind me. I immediately spotted an elevator at the end of the hallway. I walked towards the elevator and somehow, I knew how it worked. That was bugging me out as well. My memory was selective. I didn’t understand how I was able to remember things like a phone, how to get dressed and how use an elevator, but I couldn’t figure out who I was.
Once I got in the elevator and went downstairs, the doors to the elevator opened up in a convenient store. I started to quickly walk through. I wanted to get outside as fast as possible.
“Aaron!” I heard a yell from someone over at the register.
I froze. My first thought was that I must live here and the guy who works here just wants to say hi. But then I thought, maybe this guy can help me. I looked up and started to walk towards the guy at the register. “Hey, do you think you can help me?” I asked.
“Yeah, of course, boss. Whatever you need.” The guy replied.
I continued to speak with hesitation, “I think there is something wrong. I have forgotten who I am. I think I need help.”
The guy at the registered started to laugh. “Your name is Aaron. You run this store and live upstairs. You’re a pretty boring guy, if you ask me. Not much to tell.”
Now I was even more confused. “I run this place?”
Before the guy at the registered could even answer, sirens could be heard again outside. We both looked at the door. The black van pulled up right outside. The guy at the registered and I both looked at each other. Five people all dressed in all white suites and showing no emotion entered the store. They quickly started to circle the guy at the register. All five people started to repeatedly recite, “It’s time. It’s time. It’s time.”
The guy at the registered started to cry. He went from being super chill to completely terrified within seconds. “No. No. I don’t want to go yet. Please no.”
The five people moved closer to the guy behind the counter to grab his arms and arrest him. They then escorted him out into the black van.
I was then left in the store by myself. I walked behind the counter as I started to pace again. “WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING!” I yelled as I put my head down on the counter.
I then heard the door to the store open again. I looked up. There was a man in front of me with a gun aimed at me. “Give me all your money.” They said to me.
I started to cry, “I don’t know how this register works. I just got here. Please take whatever you want.”
“I want the money in the register.” They insisted.
I continued to cry, “I already said, I don’t…”
At that moment, the man shot me in the chest, and I immediately blacked out. I then suddenly opened my eyes, and I was laying in the bed in the upstairs apartment once again. Just like before, I still had no memory of who I was, but I could completely remember what had just happened downstairs in the store. To say that I was freaking out would be an understatement. Was I stuck in an awful nightmare?
