OUT FRONT Magazine - February 2022 - Free Love and Asexuality

Feb 5, 2022

The latest issue of OUT FRONT Magazine is on the stands now, and I have a new comic in there! The topic of the issue is probably pretty obvious, yeah? But this seemed like a good issue to do a comic looking at just a few of the different manifestations that asexuality can take.

You can read the magazine online via their website (I'm on page 6).

I didn't actually decide on a color scheme until the last minute, when it suddenly dawned on me that the asexual pride flag (and the aromantic pride flag) was the perfect palette. I do love me some purple.

Alas, purple and CMYK printing tech do not get along very well. Nope, not very well at all. Greens and purples are difficult to replicate in CMYK; there's just not much of a range available. So a bright, vibrant purple on the screen will typically look more muted and darker in print. Here's a side-by-side comparison of the digital version of panel 2 and the print version:

A thing I would like to do someday is a crash course in prepress. I've never worked on that end of the production line, so while I know there are tools to help the printer smush some of the purples back into gamut, I don't actually know what they are. Anyway, sorry for all the purples and greens, print techs!
