The first was a stupid operating system problem. The game was operating perfectly on my computer, but crashing on everybody else's. After much wasted time, Chris Conley finally figured it out: the Mac OS can handle file names containing the question mark (?), but Linux and Windows cannot. All I had to do was rename about a dozen files, but finding the problem ate up the better part of a week.
I wasted more time trying to integrate the HistoryBook display into the Character display. It just won't happen. So I dumped it into the "We'll fix the program later" bin and continued working on the storyworld itself.
Good progress was made on the storyworld. The characters now engage in decent conversations, although much work remains to be done in two regards: 1) integrating moods into their behavior; and 2) instilling long-term strategic thinking into their behavior.
I also solved the problem of the dream combat algorithm for the characters. This proved to be a tough nut to crack, but the solution I came up with looks robust.
There's still a ton of work to do; I am pessimistic that I will meet the August deadline. But this game is definitely going to be finished; I really can see a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel.
