The Asheville Blade: A Conversation With David Forbes

"So it's important for people to understand how the city functions because as far as systems of government go, this is where power really starts to touch the ground. A lot of the horrific things done at the national and state levels has to be carried out here. There are few aspects that city government doesn't affect in some way. And often a lot of the things that are most fundamental. But its also the most ignored level. Sometimes people are a lot more aware of what is going on in congress than they are to what is going on in city hall that could get them evicted in a year. So I think that's why its important. People may or may not be interested in city government, but city government is very interested in them. Often to the detriment of whole populations and communities."

On this episode of the Firestorm Community Sustainers Drive, we sit down with local investigative journalist David Forbes. David is the founder and editor of The Asheville Blade, a local news site known for its rigorous long-form journalism and principled perspectives on the inner workings of Asheville city government’s economic and social issues. In our talk, we discuss what first drew David to journalism, the factors that led them to start the Asheville Blade, her ideas of what it takes for grassroots organizing to successfully push back against monied interest in the city, and ways listeners can support her ongoing efforts. We hope you enjoy the informed insights shared here today.
