August 11th, 2018 (Update)
Hey, it's Sunday morning - where's the BattleTech video?

Well, I wasn't really happy with how the bookkeeping segments turned out, so I decided to pull it back and redo them. I know it's frustrating to have to keep waiting like this, but this should be the last delay.

Since you've all been very patient, I figured I'd peel back the curtain and spend a quick moment talking about my thought process here. My BattleTech series is still in the "experimental" phase right now - I'm still not quite sure how to approach each episode.

That's the same way I approached other series, like Battle Brothers, Darkest Dungeon, and even XCOM 2: WotC. At first I really wasn't sure what I wanted to do with them, but it all kind of came together over the first few episodes. By the time I'd finished the first 10 or so episodes, I had a much better idea of what I was doing, and it became a lot easier to put them together.

With BattleTech, I've been trying to approach it in a pretty basic fashion - semi-improvised commentary, no scripted segments, no special narration. It seemed to work okay for the first few episodes, but now that we're getting into the meat of the game the bookkeeping segments are starting to drag too much.

After finishing my first run on the commentary track, I realized over half the video was just me shuffling pilots around, giving Yang repair orders, and agonizing over how to customize one of our mechs. That's fine for something like a livestream, but for a cut and edited episode I just wasn't happy with how it flowed.

In the end, I decided to cut and trash all of the bookkeeping segments I already had recorded. My new plan is to put together some short scripted segments, maybe 2-3 minutes long, to briefly go over the highlights. I've already got those segments written and recorded, so now I just need to clean and edit them before I can recut the episode.

It's a bit more work than just winging it, but I'm hoping the end results will be a little better. If not, then I'll just try something different next time.

Either way, I plan on wrapping this project up soon so I can move on to recording the audio for my July Retrospective. Sorry to keep you waiting, Raiders.
