Austerity Measures I: The Ghost of De Grigny Descends
This is the first movement of my organ piece Austerity Measures, performed by Evan Allen. The language of this movement is derived from the french Baroque in pacing, style, and content. It is intended to replicate the slow-boil gravity of overtures in French liturgical organ music. Nicholas De Grigny (1672-1703) is an important organ composer, and his cerebral, sprawling compositions are like a byzantine tapestry one can keep gazing at. The first movement of this piece is dedicated to him.
