The Beach Boys on CD: That Lucky Old Sun
New blog post, looking at Brian Wilson's 2008 album.

I have to put a content warning on this one, though it's a very mild warning -- Brian Wilson's songwriting collaborator on many of these songs was convicted of rape last year, and I have to mention that in the preamble. There is no good way to deal with something like that when you're trying to talk about music, and had I not committed to writing books about all the Beach Boys' albums including their solo work long before that happened, and had people not spent literally years asking me when volume three was coming out, I would have just never written about this album again. It feels like an abrogation of moral responsibility to just talk about the songs.

As it is, I've tried just to minimise my discussions of Bennett's contributions and just look at what Brian Wilson did, while still acknowledging Bennett's presence where necessary, and stating that that's what I'm doing up-front, as this is what several people whose instincts I trust (in many cases survivors themselves) have said would be the best way to deal with an impossible situation.
