A few months ago, Christian and I were taking a walk in Le Marais, a central district of Paris. I recognized the streets and told him that my father used to live around there. We decided to have a look, and we realised that the main entrance of the building was not locked. Christian entered, and he made a very surprising and totally unexpected discovery...
That event, which will be narrated more in details in the story, triggered the desire to tell more about my personal history. I gathered the few items I have that belonged to my father, and started drawing them. At first, I thought I would just tell about what happened that day in Le Marais, like a simple anecdote, and share it with my friends as a webcomic on my blog. But then I quickly realised that in order for them to fully understand what happened that day, I would have to tell much more about the context. And that context included historic events that happen in Vietnam - at the time a French protectorate known as Indochina - a long time ago, in the 19th century!
When I sent the first drafts of my comic to Christian, he was very enthusiastic and encouraged me to tell my whole story, which is quite unusual but, I hope, also interesting in some way. I was delighted when he agreed to be part of this adventure. We dispatched our roles without thinking: I would tell him my story and update him about every info I collected through the years, and he would help me write the storyline. Also, he would make deeper research to complete the things I've learnt and check their accuracy, and he would interview some people that we have identified in order to enhance our story with the testimony of those who lived some of the events we are going to talk about. As for me, I would mostly focus on the narrative via my illustrations, and be in charge of making our story known by promoting it on social networks and animating this Patreon page.
We are here for the long haul, and we hope that you will be there to help us keep creating that comic.
