Nearly a year ago, Gaslit Nation interviewed UK journalist Carole Cadwalladr about the connections between Brexit, the 2016 election, and non-state hostile actors like militarized propaganda firm Cambridge Analytica. Since then, both the UK and the US have fallen further into authoritarianism, backed by a technocratic surveillance culture that weaponizes citizens’ down data against them. This week, Andrea interviews Dr. Emma Briant, a researcher at Bard College who studies propaganda and digital media. She is the author of Propaganda and Counter-terrorism: Strategies for Global Change.
In this interview, Dr. Briant discusses Cambridge Analytica, the subject of the excellent documentary The Great Hack -- available on Netflix, the role of far-right extremism, including the company's co-founder Steve Bannon, what effect the data giants have on US and UK politics, Russia's alleged help in driving the Brexit vote, the future of privacy, and what lies ahead for our interconnected world.
In regards to the alleged corruption that may have tipped the vote for Brexit, Dr. Briant provided the following statement and links to reports, especially in regards to the historic level of funding provided for LeaveEU by British financier Arron Banks:
While LeaveEU received fines for data misuse and electoral law violations, the Information Commissioners Office concluded that Cambridge Analytica (CA)’s involvement with LeaveEU did not go beyond the ‘initial phase’ of preliminary discussions, and CA and LeaveEU denied they contributed to the actual campaign. Arron Banks has also denied LeaveEU received any foreign funds but refuses to disclose sources.
