A little about me. I am Anthony Christou: illustrator, concept artist and comic book creator behind A Christou Design Pty Ltd. I have been working freelance in the industry for five years making a profitable living from my art. I have worked for a variety of clients, both nationally and internationally. This includes working with video game studios, film studios, publishers, authors, advertising agencies and animation studios. My work has been honoured with awards from Conceptart.org, CGHUB and The Gnomon Workshop. The clients I have worked for include: Disney, Grinding Gear Games, Wolf Creek Productions, Two Tone Studios, Odin’s Eye Entertainment, Sagebrush FineArt, Clemenger BBDO, Liquid Development, KWP!, Liquid Animation, Layer Paint Magazine, Imagine FX, Three in a Box and more.
I was a graphic designer for eight years while producing fine art in my spare time from 2000- 2008. From 2008 – 2010, I was teaching graphic design and art while building up my business as an illustrator. In 2011 I made the jump and have been freelancing full-time ever since.
Good negotiation skills, marketing and sales experience. These are the strengths that come from fifteen years of working in leading design companies, running my own business and teaching.
Part of making this book is about passing what I have learnt to other creative professionals. Because of my diverse creative experience, I believe what I know can be passed onto any creative discipline. Even if you are a writer or fine artist or designer, this book will help you whether you have decided you want to be a professional artist, illustrator, designer or concept artist. Or you are wanting to find out what it takes to work on a video games, a movie or a comic.
Firstly, it is tough, competitive, hard work and demanding. Secondly, it is the most satisfying and rewarding career choice you could ever make - that is if you love painting gnomes, fairies, castles, dragons and robots. It can be extremely rewarding, risky but most of all exciting. It is also a career that allows you to rub shoulders with those who succeeded before you and other high profile people.
In my writing I will be covering how to become a professional artist and how to build a business. I will cover the many aspects of running a successful, profitable illustration and concept art studio.
I warn you, though, this book is only my professional advice. You need to do the hard yards yourself. It took me three years of working 6-7 days a week to grow the studio to where we now hire freelancers and assistants. This book is no guarantee but it will certainly help!
