Horror and dark fantasy innovator Clive Barker has been one of the most influential artists in my life. Not only did he reroute my teenage mind and desires to take in the darkness, the absurdity, and the pleasures of the body; he also showed me how to write without leaving desire behind; and how to be fearless in evoking fear.
So when pop culture podcast Juvenalia - hosted by AEWCH guest Sara Maria Griffin and her pal Alan Maguire - asked me to choose something pop culture + influential from my childhood, I reached straight away for Clive Barker's films, Hellraiser, Candyman, and his story collection The Books of Blood.
This was a pretty wild ride, especially since Sara and Alan, young'uns that they are, had never seen any Clive Barker movies. WHAT? I wanted to get to Nightbreed and Lord of Illusions and Hellraiser 2 and...but oh well. Next time!
