The Consumption of Women's Bodies and Cosplay
I remember yeeears ago when nobody ever wrote about cosplay. The only photos you could find from events were in people's photobucket or flickr galleries. Now that cosplay (and nerd culture in general) has entered the mainstream, we get to see tons of photos of cosplayers after each convention. However, a great deal of press attending these events is lazy. When we see the same kinds of people featured in the same kinds of articles every month, we get to see a pattern of who these photographers and journalists finds worth the time to take a photo of. This all feeds into how women in geek spaces, in cosplay, and in general receive very little respect.
