I'm ashamed to announce today's update to Space Breakers. When this game was still just some "primordial soup" my dad asked me if it's a copyright issue. Just to be on the safe-side: I sent Square-Enix an email and asked them. I received a response this morning, and apparently it is. They asked to me to stop using their intellectual property, and wished me the best of luck on my future projects. While that's not the answer I expected (and certainly not what I wanted to hear) I have to respect their position... If they tell one indie that it's cool, then they'd basically have to tell everyone that it's cool. Which it's not. It's not cool. 😥
I spent the better part of this morning deleting posts from my social media accounts, and pooped out version 0.2.
The ship and the UFO are now CC0 (Public Domain) images. The aliens have been replaced with flowers, and I made the barricades myself in M.S. Paint. The name of the game today was speed ... not quality.
Version 0.3 will be a LOT better, and will have all of the bitterness/sarcasm removed from it. In the interim: I need to come up with a new visual identity for Space Breakers.
Don't worry, y'all. The game will probably come out better than before. Plus: You're the only people on Earth who will ever get to experience the "retro" version of the game, so that's kinda cool... right?
