Hey there, Patreon family! Normally these behind the scenes/extras/bloopers posts will only be available to certain Patron tiers, but I wanted to make this first one public! I plan to do either a write-up like this one or a recorded commentary on each project I work on and include things like bloopers and script drafts/storyboards as part of my extras.
Making this video turned out to honestly probably be more trouble than it was worth… *sigh* I’d gotten a string of poorly packaged cards from online sellers and seen some hilariously packaged cards on Twitter and thought, “I ship cards ALL the time! I should make a video on it!”
But how was I supposed to make the video weird and creative? It’s just about shipping stuff! The answer was obviously a puppet, because I didn’t have the time to do big animation with this one. One idea led to another, and I decided to make the puppet’s eyes out of eggs so I could smash him for comedic effect.
But then… well, it really wasn’t funny. The puppet turned out super cute (at least I think so) and after seeing all of the violence going on in the world, I couldn’t bring myself to keep the shot. I watched it and just felt icky, you know?
I included the footage in the “blooper” video, in case you’re curious. You can watch it here: https://youtu.be/AB8twRebBfk
Sometimes cartoony violence for laughs can be funny to me, but it just felt gross and insensitive when so many people are out fighting in the streets protesting, you know?
It’s also a good reminder to me that I don’t have to stick with what I put in the script! Plans can change on the fly with creative projects and trying to chain yourself to your original idea can be super limiting!
So many other things went wrong with what should have been a simple video! I think the lapel mic I bought is probably just garbage, because what should have been good sounding… sound came out AWFUL, there were entire lines of dialogue I messed up and didn’t notice (the colorful shirt at the beginning is a reshoot because of that), and I couldn’t color correct my face to save my life.
Also, prepping a card to ship is SUPER difficult when you’re reaching around a tripod!
All and all, I’m actually pretty happy with the end result. There’s plenty of things I wish I could change, but I’ll just have to work on them for next time! I can’t wait until I’ve saved up enough money to invest in a better mic, but I think I’ve got a system figured out for my next try.
Speaking of, the next video coming out on my channel should be a mini video essay type thing on why I think Winota, Joiner of Forces is a super cool card, which I’m super excited about! Writing the script has been super enjoyable.
I’ve included my original script for the shipping video below, and as soon as I get a scanner working I’ll upload my initial storyboards too! Are there any other behind the scenes type extras you’d like to see for future videos? Shoot me a message and I’ll be sure to try and include them in the future!
Take care out there folks, and thank you so much for your support! <3
