Formula V Public Demo

With great pleasure we hereby release the 16th, and first ever public, demo of Formula V.

If you haven't heard about this game before, let us give you a very quick summary. Formula V is a fast, futuristic top-down racing game for Nintendo Virtual Boy; think F-Zero meets Micro Machines. It is about a high velocity racing series featuring spaceship-like, hovering racers that succeeded today’s "Formula" racing series, like Formula 1.

Features of this demo

  • 32 MBit ROM
  • 1 Track with 3 Variants
  • 2 playable racers
  • Race against 7 CPU-controlled opponents
  • Reverse mode - race all tracks in reverse direction
  • Supports the Link Cable for versus races
  • Race against ghosts in time trials
  • Dynamic time of the day
  • Saves best times for each track and configuration to SRAM
  • Rumble Pack support - feel the speed!
  • 5 languages: English, German, Spanish, French and Japanese

The planned specs for the final game differ a bit from these above, as the final game is planned to include four tracks with 3 variants each, an additional Championship mode, possibly additional language versions and, of course, 8 selectable racers. As such, it will be released on a 128 MBit cartridge.

Also note that all sounds and music in this demo is considered placeholders and we plan to redo them all when the respective tools are ripe.

After Capitán Sevilla 3D, this is now the second publically available game demo with support for Kevin Mellott's upcoming Virtual Boy Rumble Pack. Get ready to feel the action with a large variety of haptic feedback, once this amazing aftermarket Virtual Boy accessory releases later this year.

Game modes

This demo has four modes of play:

  • Quick Race
    Race against seven AI controlled racers on different classes, at multiple difficulty levels and at different times of the day.
  • Time Trials
    Race against the clock and your ghost (this feature works only on emulators or hardware with flash carts that have SRAM support, like FlashBoy Plus or HyperFlash32).
  • Versus Mode
    Challenge a friend in link cable powered head-to-head races!
  • Best Times
    Have a resumed view of your best times per track, direction, race class, etc., and quickly access the Time Trial mode from it.
  • Demo (or "Spectator") Mode
    Watch the AI racing against itself. It is accessed through the title screen by not pressing any button for a couple of seconds.


  • Accelerate: A
  • Brake: B
  • Steer: Left/Right (Left D-Pad)
  • Boost: Left Trigger + Right Trigger
  • Quick restart: Select + B

Pro Tip

Try not to release the gas ever! Since all the physics are throttle based and these machines have almost zero friction (they are hovering above the ground after all), the racers are easier to steer around the corners if you apply the brake without getting off the gas button.

ROM versions

This demo consists of two ROMs with different functionalities; one will only work on emulators, and the other only on hardware. This was done due to the proliferation of the reproduction cart market, where the work of the Virtual Bow homebrew community is being sold without authorization.

The Future

We will now focus on getting a preview release of VUEngine Studio in your hands (hopefully) before the end of the year. This has been cooking for quite a while but is shaping up very nicely and we can't wait for you guys to finally be able to work with it! Check this thread for an idea of what to expect when it drops.

It'll be Formula V time again when that is done. We want to give you a preview of the second track in the next backer exclusive demo.
