Gender markers are dystopic and unhelpful and we can do better!

Legal gender markers are the M, F, or now sometimes X on our identity documents. This one either-or field is a wildly inadequate way to gather the massive range of information institutions hope to gain from it. Lots of people's bodies, identities, and histories don't neatly fit into one of the two available boxes and it does us all a disservice to force people to narrow ourselves to fit the system instead of updating the system to fit our needs.

This video goes deep on the different things institutions are really asking about when they ask for legal gender markers, what the realities are for people whose gender experiences the system considers to be an error, and what the options are for institutional leaders who want to do the right thing.
