After-Action Report: First Mission with the Ψ Unit
Agent: Priscille na Camilla O Tanith
Mission: The Mount Williamson Cult - assessment and nullification
Mission Leader: Noel Bodilsen
I was assigned to the Williamson Mission, Code Name Fishes, as a test run in the Ψ Unit after my initial training in the unit.
Reports had been coming in both from external sources and from clairvoyants within the agency of:
- people coming and going at all hours in a former temple area which had been abandoned fifty years ago
- hallucinations, seizures, and blackouts from investigators and passers-by, and
- animals who passed through that region acting erratically.
The Ψ Unit action team (Noel Bodilsen leading, myself, two others) were sent in. All four of us returned and we brought back two of the perpetrators as captives.
Nb: I am concerned that this report may be affected by the hallucinations mentioned above. I list matters as they appeared to me, but where I have heard other reports of the events as they occurred, I have noted those with an asterisk (*).
Goals and objectives
Primary Goal: Assess if anything untoward (illegal, dangerous to the nation, or simply inadvisable for the people involved) was occurring and, if so, take steps to stop it.
Secondary Goal: Assess the physical structure of the abandoned temple and make recommendations to be passed on to The Lady's Servants as to the disposition of the temple.
Tertiary Goal: Assess Agent Priscille's limited precognition in a field environment.
3. Analysis of outcomes
Primary Goal: It is safe to say something untoward was and possibly still is occurring in the abandoned temple at Mount Williamson.
We encountered a group of ten people who appeared to be engaging in a ritual which bore a superficial resemblance to the Greeting of Spring - note this was nighttime in mid-autumn - however, the scene took place around a fissure from which red smoke and black flames spewed forth*. The primary "priest" was wielding not the normal tools of office but a large obsidian knife and a flail. Most of the "priests" appeared to be male, although there were at least two women involved.
Apostate practices are not inherently illegal in California; however, several of their members were restrained and one of them was dripping blood from several shallow wounds already when we entered.
Primary Goal Stage Two: We took steps to stop the ritual and to capture the "priests". At this point, the architecture of the location appeared to shift ninety degrees, such that the partial walls were now "down" and the fissure leaking smoke was now "the wall." (I note here that this appeared to be the perception of everyone on the action team).
Combat ensued, made more complicated by the appearance of several dozen smoke doppelgangers* and by the continually shifting terrain. The "priests" were unskilled in combat but motivated, and at least two of them appeared to be shaping the architecture and terrain to their aid. For instance: I moved forward (along what was putatively the ceiling) to grab a secondary "priest" and he lifted four fingers. My precognition alerted me in time to move away from a spar of rock spearing my former position.
Secondary Goal: We were unable to do a complete geographic or architectural survey of the former temple building or its outbuildings, due to the nature of the combat involved.
However, it is clear that the original earthquake damage has been exacerbated by weathering, graffiti, squatters, and, likely, use by this apostate cult.
There is something simply wrong with seeing the remains of a place of the Lady and Her Consort being desecrated such, even if it has been removed from Her roster of temples.
It is my recommendation that the place be respectfully demolished and replaced with plantings and perhaps a small monument.
Tertiary Goal: After the combat in the ruined temple, it is my assessment that I need to work on "two steps ahead" and "three steps ahead" in my precognition power, something discussed in training but for which I did not sufficiently follow-up with additional training.
While I could always see danger immediately ahead of me or ahead of a teammate, I did not do as well with actions which would avoid an immediate dangerous but place one into another danger; I don't see the next danger until I'm halfway thru avoiding the first.
I find this to be an unacceptable level of use of my powers, and I apologize to my teammates for the danger in which I inadvertently put them in at least three situations. I am fairly certain that I avoided death for at least two of us, including myself, in at least two occasions each, but that does not make up for the former. Again, I truly need to work better on consequential actions and results.
