Green Grass - Tom Waits Cover
Tom Waits is clearly at the mercy of a strange and wonderful muse. She is mischievous, volatile, and possessed of an impressive vocabulary. She has strong senses of humor, magic and poetry. How else could the same man be blessed with both "Filipino Boxspring Hog" (google it) and this song, which is as delicate and devastating as a newborn bird? 'Green Grass' was introduced to me by author Chris Ryan, who sent me a link to it, as performed by Mr. Waits with Brazililan artist Cibelle's. The song poured into my guts like cold water and woke me right up. It's about the endlessly shocking, sad, miraculous divide between the living and the dead. It may give you the haunted shivers, but in the end it will leave you feeling blessed. "God took the stars and he tossed 'em/ can't tell the birds from the blossoms/ you'll never be free of me/ he'll make a tree from me" is a contender for my favorite lyric ever written. Well done, Mr. Waits.
