The Gulag Archipelago
I have been invited to write the preface/introduction to the 50th anniversary edition of Solzhenitsyn's The Gulag Archipelago. It's hard to imagine a greater honor.

Solzhenitsyn linked the Marxist doctrines directly to the murderous actions of the Soviet regimes, making a clear case for causality (and not attributing the terror to, for example, "a cult of personality"). I want to articulate his arguments in a concise manner. It's necessary for all of us (the moderate left included) to determine exactly when and why the good intentions of the egalitarian-minded go so terribly wrong.

Not that all such intentions are by any means good...
