Having a little time away from Tokyo
Tokyo has everything. Good food, touristy spots, sleazy businessmen. You name it, it has it. But, that's just it. It has everything from every place on the planet. You can usually find something from all corners of the world. It also means that it doesn't really have its own identity, so to speak.

To get away from the hustle and bustle, I decided to travel to Nagano; a prefecture to the north of Tokyo. I stayed in a city called Matsumoto for the duration of my trip.

Matsumoto's a peaceful city. The centre is pretty much like any district in Tokyo, but once you get out of the centre, it all changes. It's a really rural area surrounded by mountains. You can climb some of these to get some amazing views of the area.

One of the key reasons to go to Matsumoto is the castle. Matsumoto boasts one of the few remaining original castles in Japan. You can tour the keep and the staff were very friendly. They also speak English for those of you who can't speak Japanese.

If you're ever in the area, definitely consider going - especially if you're a fan of Japanese history.
