Age of Ravens: History of Post-Apocalyptic RPGs (Part Three: 1988-1990)
HELL COMES TO LIST-TOWN In my last entry I looked at post-apocalyptic sources up through 1979. These included the books, movies, TV shows, and comics which might have influenced designers of the earliest games: Metamorphosis Alpha, Gamma World, The Morrow Project, Aftermath, and beyond. For this post I move forward into the Reagan-dominated 1980's.
History of Post-Apocalyptic RPGs (Part Three: 1988-1990)
In part three of this series, we say farewell to the 1980's and that particular brand of craziness. The decade opened under a mushroom cloud and ended with a wall crashing down. Post-Apocalyptic RPGs would have to change. But for these three years few did. Over half the rpgs on the list rely on a nuclear exchange as a starting point. Most fall under sci-fi, but some branch out in other directions like science fantasy and reality warping. There's also still a strong military rpg holdover in the genre.
