Detroit based band, Sweet Crystal, released their latest CD, "5 Carat Rock" earlier this month and without a doubt it is a masterpiece. The proof is in the listening. Produced by Chuck Alkazian and the band members themselves; 5 Carat Rock boasts and impressive 8 tracks that inspire and move the listener.
Sweet Crystal began back in 1974 with the core trio, Marq Andrew Speck, Bill Blatter, and Steve Wieser. Like many guys coming out the 1960s and into the early 70s, life was very different than it is today. Heavily influenced by bands from England during that time such as; Pink Floyd, Yes, Atomic Rooster, to name a few, Sweet Crystal took their cue from a sound that wasn't really happening in the USA yet and capitalized on it. Before long, they were opening for bands like; Steppenwolf, Foghat, Nazareth. Not only were the guys rubbing shoulders with some big names, but as you can imagine the influences that come along with it, and not musically. That's where the story takes an unexpected turn.
Marq explains the changes that turned Sweet Crystal into a Christian band. He said, "Essentially, God reached down and slapped me upside my head, and two things happened, one was I met Jan, the woman who would eventually become my wife. That was around 1978, and the second thing, I was born again the next year." From there, Sweet Crystal turned completely around, with Bill Blatter and Steve Wieser more than ready to continue their journey with Marq.
And how blessed we all are that they did, as they've turned their music into a mission, a ministry and through that they motto is; "Reaching The World, One Song At A Time" Winners over 15 Detroit Music Awards, and Global Music Award (Rock Category.) When you listen to the music you can hear their love of God present in their lyrics as each song is its own testimony.
Just two weeks ago, we featured, "Even Now" the opening track on the CD, and as I listened, I said, Marq, your voice is amazing, I can hear shades of Burton Cummings, "The Guess Who." and David Clayton Thomas from "Blood, Sweat & Tears" You sound so familiar to me, but so glad you're singing for the Lord!
Since then, I've received the full CD of 5 Carat Rock and a bonus CD "Quad" so, I'm happy to report Blitzers over the next two months we will be getting plenty of Sweet Crystal right here on your favorite indie radio station!
