How to Become Nightwing

Nightwing has been a frequent request here on the blog, despite the fact that, with the exception of a few cameo appearances, he's not really a game character.  Which is a crying shame, because he's one of my favorite DC universe characters and I would play the heck out of a Nightwing game!  Regardless, we do occasionally cover non-game-based characters here, and I figured it was time to give Nightwing his due.

Nightwing began as mild-mannered Dick Grayson...well, as mild-mannered as a world class child trapeze artist could be.  After the murder of his parents before his eyes, he was taken in by Bruce Wayne, and became the first, (and best) Robin.  That's right, the best Robin.  Come at me.  Bruce trained young Dick in all the ways he trained himself, although Dick maintained his individuality in his time under the Bat's wing, and struck out on his own when he came of age as Nightwing.

Nightwing is a bit smaller and slimmer than Batman, but all the same, he's still an incredible physical specimen.  Between his medium build, and flair for hand-to-hand combat, he's a strong candidate for the Fighter archetype.  With his precision, mastery of martial arts, and dedication to technique, I'd place him in the Monk class.  Let's take a deeper look and see what would go into becoming Nightwing!

The Nightwing Workout is going to be pretty intense.  As mentioned above, Nightwing is both slimmer and more acrobatic than Batman.  Even so, he's at near-superhuman levels of strength, speed, and stamina.  We're going to do a hybrid workout program for him, focusing a lot on ring work, as well as some weight training, mostly for leg strength.  We also need to build a solid cardiovascular base, and anaerobic conditioning for combat readiness!  We want to try to reach the peak of human fitness in every way possible.

In The Skills of Nightwing, we're first going to look at his Martial Arts prowess (as we usually do for characters.)  He's credited with mastering many, many arts but we're going to highlight three: Boxing, Judo, and Escrima.  Three arts that, when put together, should create and incredibly complete fighter.  After that, we're going to take a look at some acrobatic and circus skills.  Finally, we're going to talk about some of the Bat-family skills that he uses regularly, like detective work and disguise.

Not Your Sidekick is going to focus on Nightwing's emergence from Batman's shadow, and the importance of developing your own identity when you feel like you walk among giants.  We're also going to take a look at how Dick Grayson is the light and wit of the Bat-family, and how he helps to hold them all together.  We're also going to take a look at escaping despair and darkness, which Nightwing did when he made the decision not to walk Bruce's path of vengeance.

To be honest, Nightwing is basically who I would aspire to be if I was a superhero (well, a non-powered hero...) so I'm really stoked to be covering him.  I hope you are too!  I'll see you again on Thursday for The Nightwing Workout!
