Hey, friends! Today, I was feeling a bit mucky and unmotivated, so to spark my inspiration, I decided to try Christine Nishiyama’s “Influence Map” template (sorry for some of the blurry images; this is just a reference for me, so I didn’t hunt for HD images). I downloaded the PDF a while ago, but never sat down to actually fill it out. I’m really happy I did it today because I think this will definitely help me guide my art’s direction in the future better.
Christine recommends pulling things from your childhood because those are the things that would have influenced you and your subconscious, even if you don’t immediately think of these things as your inspiration. I remembered a couple of things I don’t actively think about it, such as The Legend of Holly Claus, illustrated by Laurel Long, and The Neverending Story film. By the way, these are in no particular order as far as the numbers go. I just put things where my intuition said to do so.
Looking at this influence map, I can definitely see where my love of muted, dark colors plus that nice shades of red comes from. Oh, and my love of complimentary colors, like red and green or orange and blue. Also, give me white hair and dark brows any day—I will love it haha. I also seem to have been influenced by all kinds of fantasy and whimsical themes, which, I realize now, can be seen in my work now. Looking at the illustrations in The Legend of Holly Claus again brought back some amazing childhood memories, but it also made me realize I want to spend more time on my artwork and make more flushed and finished pieces of artwork.
If you want to give this assignment a shot, Christine has it available to download on her website here (no, not sponsored or anything—I just thought it would be helpful for you ❤️).
What do you think? Does this show my subconscious inspirations? Can you seen the influence in my work? Let me know in the comments below!
