I bring you this interlude in my previously-scheduled three-part Patreon update to tell you about several SUPER AWESOME THINGS that have happened/are happening this week.
First, Laura and I had a photo shoot today with my friend Cinnamon (of the guitars and peacocks shoot), and holy god, it was amazing. Images to look forward to: me playing washboard in a wedding dress (I'll tell you that story later), our five (5!) instruments around a fireplace (and that's not including ones in the works!), and ~ our favorite ~ some topless photos with some hilariously (and tastefully) placed instruments.
For real, I can't wait to see them. I'll post them as soon as we get them.
Next. It's almost mid-March in Austin, and you know what that means ~ South by Southwest (or SXSW, or Southby) is nearly upon us.
*Entire city of Austin takes a deep, bracing, groaning breath.*
Yes, that epic annual monster of a festival is about to invade, and enwrap our city in Doritos logos, lost Uber & Lyft drivers, a truly abysmal amount of traffic, and nonstop drunk people looking for their next show. "Yeah dude, I know it's your Southby, but I'm just trying to get to work" ~ every resident of Austin, for 10 days straight.
But! There are also some massively cool things that happen in and around Southby (including the third part of this post, which I'll get to below). Laura and I have a gig this Friday at Cherrywood Coffeehouse on the north east side of town, which stands to be truly awesome provided it's not raining. (We had some LEGIT thunder/lightning/rainstorms last night ~ to the point where we crashed at our friend's house rather than try to drive home. Weather. I love you so much. But also, please don't rain out my gig.)
We'll also perform at a house concert on the 17th, and have a standing invitation at a couple of cafes/ coffeeshops to just drop in and play music pretty much anytime. Between that and the busking we're planning on doing basically all week, it stands to be a pretty fun (and possibly slightly lucrative) week for us. Also an insane one, because it's Southby and it can't not be. *cue sigh of entire city again*
FINALLY ~ Amanda Palmer, who as many of you know is a huge personal inspiration of mine ~ posted on her Patreon patrons-only feed yesterday that she was IN AUSTIN, doing a Thing at a fundraiser for a local nonprofit (Austin Bat Cave, hooray creative writing programs for youth!) and that we should stop by and say hi. So we did! I've met her once before at BookPeople (and eyegazed with her for a minute ~ auuuuuugh <3), but had no expectation of being remembered. However, it's a tradition amongst her fans to bring her things (because she's so gracious about loving and accepting them), so I brought her a Keep Austin Weird kite Teo acquired for me at the kite festival this weekend (he came with no kites, and because he's a tree climber, left with 13) and of course a copy of the demo. She accepted both with a smile, and said she'd listen to the demo on the way home ~ which, knowing her, if she didn't last night, she will listen to it eventually and OH GOD AMANDA PALMER HAS A COPY OF MY DEMO *breathes heavily*.
Handing one of your idols something that they directly inspired you to make, and them saying they'll listen to it...
No words for that, there.
*shivers with happiness & gratitude*
Also, her NEW SONG MACHETE came out today, and it is COMPLETELY AMAZING. Go listen (with headphones), and read the story if you can spare the time. It's heartfelt, moving and emblematic of why I admire her so much. In my mind, she's one of the truest Artists out there these days (and certainly one for the ages). Her LIFE is her art.
Oh, and of course, go watch her TED talk if you haven't already (I'll spread that around til the day I die).
Ok, time to go rehearse (and jam with our friend Jonathan on cello, aaaaaaahhhhh!). 2nd & 3rd part of the promised updates coming soon, and happy hump day to everyone!
