Jimmy Carter acted in the way people always say that they want politicians to act. He was remarkably honest. He worked with various people on real solutions. He worked to empathize with the American people. Yet by doing those things, he often saw his own policies and politics fail. This is perhaps best embodied by a speech known as the "malaise" speech, even though he never said that word. Instead, Carter addressed the oil crisis taking place in 1979 by describing the nation's "Crisis of Confidence" regarding energy, politics, economics, government, and even spirituality.
