The Andrea Doria was a symbol of Italian pride, as the most luxurious and grandest ocean liner of the 1950s. Despite the change in travel, the Andrea Doria would be a popular ship, carrying tourists as well as immigrants between Genoa and Italy. Yet it still was not invulnerable to being run in to by the Swedish ship MS Stockholm in thick fog off Nantucket. The Stockholm's ice breaking prow blew a hole in the Andrea Doria's starboard side, turning the Andrea Doria on its side, and killing 46 people in the wreck. However, the vast majority of people onboard were able to be rescued from the wreck of the Andrea Doria.
