Disabled independence is hard to achieve in America. Disability payments are too low to live on, and many disabled adults have to live with their parents or a partner. Disabled adults are victims of domestic violence at staggering rates, both from parents and partners, in large part due to lack of safe alternatives. Most abuse shelters aren’t wheelchair accessible, for example, and our necessary medication may be banned as a controlled substance.
Everything we can do for ourselves makes us less reliant on others who may mistreat us. Feeding ourselves is one of the most important activities of daily living (ADLs in disability speak). If we cannot eat independently, then we cannot live independently, and we are vulnerable to whoever we live with.
