Surprise! It's time for a new collection of Lynn Reacts! This time, I'll be watching Lost Song, a 2018 anime licensed by Netflix. As per usual, I know virtually nothing that wasn't mentioned in the trailer. I know this has song magic and... Okay, that's about it. Look, when song magic is involved I am very easily persuaded to engage with it. (Except The Order of the Thorn. I have yet to engage with that song-involved game because I wasn't that wild on the demo, somehow, and it tried to be LOOM but better. YOU CANNOT BE LOOM-BUT-BETTER BECAUSE LOOM IS PERFECTION. But I digress.)
Anyway, so Lost Song is about a girl and a woman who can both use songs to create magical effects, notably healing. And there's a war about to happen. Supposedly. (Look, until I see actual enemies that are actually in an army that is actually part of a different country according to everyone, I will be sceptical.) And here ends all I know about this anime. I am expecting songs. I am expecting shiny magics. I am expecting fun! (Spoiler: I got all these things and why did I divide this into "watch four episodes at a time" instead of "bingewatch all you have time for until the end; it's only twelve episodes that won't take long".)
Ahem. But here, a little while after the live livereacts, is the collection of my reactions, neatly divided by episode. (I rewatched 4 especially to figure out where the episode began because sometimes I get so caught up I forget to mention when a new episode starts.)
As always, it's available to everyone. Patrons with access to Discord can join in with me Monday evenings all through December! (Yes, I know. I watched these in the late afternoon this time. I am really, really bad at getting set times to watch things. I blame other people who do not respect how I divide my time. One day I will get a schedule going properly. ONE DAY.)
It's been a while, thanks to NaNoWriMo, but it's finally time to get back to the livereacts! Surprise! Today it's the first four episodes of Lost Song!
I know absolutely nothing about this show, by the by, except that it's got song magic and, in case A Promise Broken didn't make it really obvious, that is kind of my jam. Like a lot.
We're starting this episode off really mysteriously.
Why does this show start so SAD? And they're not doing much except STAND THERE.
Is this one of those "we start at the end and look at how we got there?" shows?
'cause I hate those. In a good way. They're SO good when they're done well.
Are you suuuuuure that's what it's supposed to do, Al?
WHY IS RIN NOT ALLOWED TO SING?!
WHAT IS WRONG WITH SINGING, SHOW.
Oh. That's why she's not allowed to sing. It's called magic.
NO, AL, THAT IS AMAZING.
Also if Rin can create magic by singing, it actually seems like a REALLY GOOD IDEA to get her some actual training.
Wow. He's got a sour face. Who gave HIM lemons for breakfast?
Let me guess: Finis is in love with Leobolt.
Oh, they're cute together.
HOW is there a war coming? WHY is there a war coming? WHAT war?
No, don't go back to Rin and everyone!
See, grandfather person? THIS is why you teach Rin about song magic.
Because she'll just randomly burst into song.
I feel very seen by this song.
I needed this song in my life.
That's.... not good.
Don't kill off Leobolt after just introducing him!
Grandpa should explain WHY not to sing "that song".
This is a healing song, apparently.
WHY is she not allowed to sing the song that HEALS PEOPLE?
HEALING PEOPLE IS GOOD.
I don't like this prince.
He's rubbish at caring for his people.
Well, that's a small request for saving his life.
Al, how do you not know what's going on in the forest around your own village?
Well, that's not good.
Grandpa, what have you been keeping from your grandchildren?
Leobolt, I admire your courage, but DON'T DIE THIS EPISODE.
I need you to rise up against the evil prince. T_T
Look, grandpa, just TELL PEOPLE why Rin's songs are dangerous.
Well, that's not good.
Oh, that is very VERY not good.
Yes, definitely not good.
Rin, maybe hide in the true again.
Well, THAT invention worked how it ought to.
I DON'T BUY THIS, PRINCE. I THINK YOU'RE STAGING THIS.
Okay. So. Rin, you have a healing song. Maybe, IDK, use it?
THANK YOU, AL.
See, that at least is a good reason not to sing: being too upset to.
So... what was the point of Finis singing the healing song?
Are we sure that is WAS a healing song?
No, episode 2!
Awwww, someone needs to give these kids a hug.
Well, at least this opening gives me some hope that Leobolt is still alive.
Well, these people seem nice at least.
A what now?
Oh, it's a hut for people who can use magic in their songs.
Well, THAT's certainly not suspicious timing.
SOMEONE GIVE RIN A HUG
Okay, random lady who I'm sure will be important eventually, HOW are your boobs not hanging out of that corset?
ah, she's a court minstrel.
No, I don't know why Netflix didn't write "Leopold" either.
Are you suuuuuuuure several other countries are attacking you?
'cause I'm still not buying it.
That's a nice dream, Leobolt.
Are you suuuuure you're not clumsy, Finis?
Because you look plenty clumsy to me.
How even did they get to the border so fast?
ANY SENSIBLE PERSON WOULD BE, RUDO.
How have people not revolted against you yet, Rudo?
Minstrel lady, I don't think you really grasp how renting rooms works.
He's a kid.
He gets to call himself a genius.
YOU THINK, king?
So. Apparently there are other countries and there's a skirmish with one called Granania, yes? So far so good.
I still blame Rudo for setting the whole thing up, but we'll let that slide for now.
So, the king is here going "Oh. They must have noticed we have a singer whose songs are utter magic".
Which, okay, fair enough. But apparently they're "pretty sharp" to have noticed.
THE FIRST TIME WE SAW HER SHE IS WAS GIVING A PUBLIC PERFORMANCE SUMMONING UP WATER TO CREATE A WATERFALL.
IN THE CAPITAL CITY.
I'd argue that the neighbouring country has to be pretty darned oblivious and dense NOT to notice the singing lady making magic happen.
Still not buying that there's an actual war going on here.
Oh, look. There's a plot against Leobolt and Rin.
HI LEOBOLT. EVEN THE BUTTERFLIES LIKE YOU.
This isn't going to end well.
Finis, you're even more likely to get lost than I am.
Well, THAT certainly isn't creepy.
Leobolt, did you just throw FLOWERS at an assassin?
Oh, you are so head over heels for her.
So head over heels.
Awww, he's now Finis' bodyguard.
And this show is shaping up to have all the songs I wanted.
Wow, you're fine remarkably quickly after your sister's just DIED IN YOUR ARMS.
oooh, that looks familiar.
Rin's grandfather had that.
"Not good" is a terrible description.
How'd the old lady know to sell out Rin and Al?
(I really wish Netflix would subtitle the opening and ending credits.)
I guess when I've watched the next two episodes, I'll just have to look for fansubs.
Also, oh, if I didn't already predict that Finis/Leobolt was going to be a thing, these credits would do it.
Episode 3 is up!
Well, that certainly explains why she'd let the kids have the food for free.
Oh, her name is Pony.
And she's a) pissed off, b) a martial artist.
Very smart, Al.
Al, did you make a BOMB?
Why on earth would you make a BOMB?
Oh, I like Leobolt.
(Look, he just cheered up a tiny child. I am here for that.)
WELL, IT'S NOT RUDO PROTECTING YOU, that's for sure.
He got mobbed for being a nice guy.
BECAUSE HE'S NOT A KNOB, RUDO.
I'm sure if you just... tried not to be a jerk. For, like, the rest of your life, people would like you better than Leobolt.
Oh, that's fireworks not a bomb.
Rin, sweetie. I know that doesn't matter, but.
PULL THE DAGGER OUT OF AL'S SHOULDER BEFORE HEALING HIM.
No, Leobolt. He's going to use Finis' songs to cause world peace.
OF COURSE he wants to use her for war.
Well, that certainly could have gone better.
Did you have to heal Al RIGHT THEN, Rin?
What are you planning, Pony?
That's... not good either.
Leobolt, I have to say for a really good knight, you FAIL at bodyguarding anyone.
[ded of giggles]
That packed a punch.
This isn't creepy at all.
Can someone still explain who Alea Golt is?
I blame Rudo, Leobolt.
Oh, good. They did get the magical fire actual food.
MAYBE SAVE THE SINGING THAT'S MURDERING YOU FOR PROTECTING LEOBOLT FROM DEATH?
I mean, I'm pretty sure he'd be upset if you just sang your life away for semifrivolous things.
Rudo, I'm pretty sure you organised this yourself.
Bless him, I'm pretty sure he doesn't even realise Rudo is jealous.
Well, Al wasn't lying. She really does love food.
What on earth,
I still don't buy this whole war situation.
Finis, what are you doing?
Still not buying the part where this country is under attack.
Oh, are we amassing orchestras now?
I don't know why, but yes. We're amassing orchestras.
I will be sorely disappointed if there aren't any song battles in the future.
[raises hand] Rudo, how is her song supposed to work ONLY for your soldiers?
I'm not sure that's how it works.
Well, that was lucky.
How is she asleep?
Good question, Al.
I have no idea.
Well, Rin and Allu are certainly hitting it off.
If by "hitting it off" you mean "do not get on at all".
Oh, don't take it along, Al.
That's bound to be bad news.
Well, that was creepy.
Well, if that wasn't foreshadowing of some kind.
There isn't even blood on Leobolt's sword.
These soldiers look very different from the ones Leobolt was in.
I doubt that it's a GOOD idea, Rudo.
Oh, look. Allu and Monica are the daughters.
Oh, Al's face.
I like Rin.
You're the only one who thought that was a good idea, Rudo.
Bless you, Leobolt.
I'm pretty sure Rudo blackmailed her into it.
Oh, look. They're running to Leobolt again.
Well, sort of.
And oh damn, I'm out of episode for the day.
