sometimes i find books on the cart that are so charming in both concept and execution that i cant help but flip through them aimlessly for a while. its rare that this happens for more than just a page or two (because i want to keep moving and not be a useless lump) but a rare Very Good Book passed through my hands.
the title and illustrations sucked me in immediately. i feel like its the cartoonists love letter to a subject he just happens to know a lot about. i dont know anything about reg manning but i like his style and his passion for cacti.
the writing style is endearingly educational but casual. it doesnt try to be anything more than it is. its like your uncle put his arm around you at the family bbq and is like "there's some things you gotta know about cacti" and youre not sure what youre supposed to do with this information but you appreciate it regardless.
i also found something my kid self would have gone apeshit for. DRAGONS. DRAGONS FIGHTING DINOSAURS. DRAGONS OF THE ICE
LOVE these 90s cgi style artworks. amazing.
whenever i have to put a price tag on a book, you put it on the back, which gives me an opportunity to skim the text on the back cover which is usually 300000 times less interesting than whatever the fuck is happening here.
this is from a book on creationism and fossils. mostly im sharing this with you because i cant believe im not dreaming what im reading.
last and least i found some old school pro-arnold schwarzenegger propaganda from the early 2000s which is assisted by the author's fursona
its Really Bad. californians voted for this
this is the back cover of the book.
