Mountain West Basketball Top 25: #12

Oct 25, 2017

The following player in our countdown is 12th on the staff's list.

Fresno State guard and Colorado transfer Jaron Hopkins is our #12 player in the MWC Wire Basketball Countdown.

In two seasons with Colorado, Hopkins appeared in 67 games and started 26 of them. He averaged 5.3 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game, and also played 20 minutes in Colorado's Round of 64 matchup against Pittsburgh his freshman season.

After sitting out the 2015-16 season due to NCAA transfer eligibility rules, Hopkins started 27 of his 33 appearances with Fresno State last season. He led Fresno State in points per game, rebounds per game, assists per game, and steals per game. Hopkins is Fresno's leading scorer, but he might even be know more so for his defensive abilities, where he finished 18th in the nation in steal percentage with 4.1%, per KenPom.

Hopkins might be the best pure defender in the league, and if he continues to lead Fresno State on the offensive end, don't be shocked if the senior guard ends up on the all-conference team once March rolls around.
