Nailing Down The Genre

Although I haven't started the 'down in the dirt' work yet, I am getting a high level look at this project, and have started asking myself some questions - like, wtf was I thinking? - but seriously, one of the big ones is all about genre.

What is genre? The style and type of story(s) I am writing.

Its' important to get it right, because readers have a whole lot of expectations when they pick up a book described as a certain "genre". For example, if I'm choosing to spend my quiet hour or two under the duvet every night with "mystery/thrillers" - I'm wanting a dead body or two. I'm not expecting unicorns. And if I get unicorns, I am not happy. I feel cheated.

So to avoid that disappointment in my readers - I'm getting it all sorted before I start....
