Rivers and subterranean caves abound on Yucatan State. All is explained by the geological structure of the peninsula, formed of karst whose origin is limestone. As a result, erosion creates characteristic cavities and chasms. In Yucatán, there would be more than 10 000 and a theory explains that the impact of a meteorite in the Gulf of Mexico would have caused their collapse. In any case, nature has done well by offering us these freshwater jewels !
