TLDR: New textures will no longer get released every day, they will instead be released in packs on a weekly basis.
On January 15th 2018 I started CC0Textures.com. At that point the it featured around 20 relatively simple textures that I had created beforehand. Starting from there I uploaded one texture every single day (1.06 textures/day actually). The motivation behind this was to grow the CC0 Textures library as fast as I possibly could in order to be able to provide a solid foundation for a wide variety of scenes.
Since then the site has grown quite substantially. CC0Textures.com now offers more than 750 PBR materials, making it the biggest site of its kind (?) and serves ~2.5 Million downloads per year. And I feel that in this context the original “one upload per day” approach no longer makes sense. Let me explain:
“What exactly will happen?”
The upload schedule will change. CC0Textures.com will move from a daily release schedule to releasing packs of textures every one or two weeks. The last material of the old schedule - Painted Wood #05 - will come out tomorrow (January 7th). After that new packs will be released in a weekly fashion starting with a solar panel material on Sunday, January 12th. I have not made a final decision on which weekday new packs are going to be released, so feel free to make suggestions.
“So there will be less textures?”
Not necessarily. There may be some weeks with only 1-3 materials being released. But this weekly, pack-based release schedule also allows me to release more variations of Substance Materials. With the current system uploading more than 7-10 variations becomes problematic as they block up the release queue for weeks. With this new system I can publish just one or two high quality photoscans in one week and then follow it with 10-15 variations of a Substance Material without boring out anyone by uploading similar materials for weeks.
“Why is this change happening?”
Forcing myself to publish one asset per day for two full years has been fascinating and I am glad that I did it. But it has also been quite stressful at times and I feel that in some cases I it has motivated me to put quantity before quality. With this new system it is easier for me to focus on more complicated materials without worrying about having to release something every single day.
I also want to use this opportunity to focus more on additional content like the second version of the CC0 Textures Material Creation Guide (whose scope seems to never stop growing, help…!!), tutorial videos or the “Substance Walkthroughs” which I could not produce with the frequency that I wanted due to time constraints.
Releasing the textures every week also makes it easier to “advertise” them around the internet. Whenever a new pack comes out I can combine all the materials into a neat graphic and post that to twitter, reddit and maybe even instagram. Yes, CC0 Textures actually has an instagram account but I never used it because I couldn’t automate the posts. Making one manual post per week is manageable enough to give it a second try. (So follow me: instagram.com/cc0textures)
This is a big change for CC0 Textures (or at least for me) and I kinda don’t like to write these cliche phrases that YouTubers and other “influencers” use, but CC0 Textures has been an incredible project for me. Just typing “cc0textures.com” into google and scrolling through the results from all over the world excites me every time as I always find some new person or organization (from the other side of the world or just a few train stops away) using my textures.
