Noel Mewton-Wood plays the Busoni Concerto Op. 39
Australian pianist Noel Mewton-Wood in a magnificent January 1948 concerto performance of Busoni's titanic Piano Concerto with Sir Thomas Beecham conducting the BBC Symphony Orchestra and BBC Men's Chorus. Aged merely 25 at the time of the performance, the Schnabel pupil plays with remarkable command of the instrument that helps him highlight large-scale dramatic nature of the work, with his marvellous tonal and dynamic range aided by subtle pedal technique. Mewton-Wood committed suicide at the age of 31 in 1953.
This upload features separate clips for each of the five movements and are presented here in a playlist that should play through the entire work on YouTube.
