Thanks to injuries and a thin division, The New Day have held the Tag Team championship belts for a good portion of the last year; they first won the titles at Extreme Rules on April 26th of last year, and in their 2 combined reigns they have held the belts for almost 230 days (as of writing this). The only other team to have held the Tag Team titles were the Prime Time Players, who have seemingly been disbanded at this point. Because of the New Day's long reign, combined with the thin Tag division, there are quite a few people complaining on Social Media that they feel oversaturated with The New Day (I am not one of those people).
Rounding out the division right now are The Dudley's, The USOs, and The Lucha Dragons. From what I've seen out of the USOs, I think they're good in-ring workers, but I heavily dislike them when they do promos; they're not a bad team, they just don't really do anything for me. The Lucha Dragons seemed to be getting a push towards the Tag Team titles until Sin Cara suffered a dislocated shoulder at the hands of Big E. In Sin Cara's absence, Kalisto has gotten a push as a singles wrestler, winning the Unites States Championship (twice). With Sin Cara back from injury - and Kalisto still the U.S. champ - will the Lucha Dragons get another push towards the Tag titles, or will they end up splitting the pair up in favour of continuing Kalisto's singles push? Then there's The Dudley's. Along with the USOs - and, to a smaller extent, the Lucha Dragons - The Dudley's have had a handful of Tag Team title matches against The New Day over the last 6 months. With The Dudley's recently turning heel, it seems unlikely they will get another shot at the titles anytime soon - at least, while The New Day are still supposed to be heels. Additionally, I think fans are getting tired of seeing the same 4 teams continuously going after each other.
There are a few other tag teams, but none of whom are seriously in the mix for the titles, as well as those who are injured. Tyson Kidd and Cesaro were gelling well as a team until they both went down with injuries. There's the Ascension, who just haven't gotten over and aren't taken seriously on the main roster - even though they hold the distinction of being the longest reigning NXT Tag Team champions. As noted above, The Prime Time Players were in the mix for a bit - and even held the Tag titles briefly - but they were sort of quietly disbanded a few months back. Other than that, you get the random groupings of tag teams; Curtis Axel and Damien Sandow, the interchangeable pairings of Sheamus/Barrett/Rusev before adding Del Rio to the mix and becoming the League of Nations, the formation of The Social Outcasts (Axel/Heath Slater/Bo Dallas/Adam Rose), etc. Aside from the injured Kidd and Cesaro, all of these teams are just tag team fillers though.
So, what to do? How to reinvigorate the main roster tag division? I mean it's so weak, the Tag Team titles aren't even being defended at the upcoming Fastlane PPV.
My proposal is that you do nothing. Do absolutely nothing, until the Raw before WrestleMania. On the "go home" Raw, you have New Day come out and cut a promo basically saying that they've beat everybody in the division and that there's no competition, therefore they will not be defending the titles at WrestleMania. After New Day says this, Enzo and Cass' music hits as they come out to the ring; Raw will be in Brooklyn that night, so they'll get a HUGE pop. Enzo and Cass cut a promo and eventually challenge New Day to a match that night, the stipulation being that if they win they get a championship match at Mania. Enzo and Cass obviously go over to set up a Tag Team title match at WrestleMania, then beat New Day for the belts in Dallas.
The night after WrestleMania, obviously people are expecting some NXT call-ups. I suggest having Dash and Dawson drop the NXT Tag titles to Jordan and Gable at the NXT Takeover Dallas special, and then calling them up for the Raw after WrestleMania. You have Dash and Dawson cut a promo saying something along the lines of "Enzo and Cass, you couldn't get the job done and beat us in NXT, what makes you think you're good enough to hold the WWE Tag Team titles. We're going to beat you for them just like we beat you down in NXT." This sets up a feud not only between Dash/Dawson and Enzo/Cass, but also Dash/Dawson against New Day; New Day can essentially have a beef with Dash and Dawson for trying to cut to the front of the line for a title shot before New Day even gets a chance at their rematch. Personally, I also think the contrast of New Day's comedy and Dash/Dawson's seriousness would make for some good promos/interactions.
Before I end this, I want to give my reason for giving Dash and Dawson the call-up post Mania instead of Blake and Murphy, whom I know a lot of people are expecting to get called up soon. I personally believe Dash and Dawson are ready for the main roster. I think Dash and Dawson have figured out a gimmick that works for them, and they've pulled it off very well in a short amount of time.
In contrast, I think Blake and Murphy are just finally starting to find a gimmick that works for them. Let's be honest, they were pretty much irrelevant for a long time. They are the second longest reigning Tag champions in NXT history, but is there anything noteworthy of their title reign? They held the titles for 219 days, and I don't think anybody remembers anything significant from them during that time. Along with Alexa Bliss, Blake and Murphy finally seem to be finding something to make themselves relevant; don't rush them up to the main roster now, let them develop these characters a little longer.
