Our interview with John Mauck is now live
John Mauck is a true believer. You have probably never heard his name, but his work has influenced cities, prisons, and national parks throughout America. Mauck is an expert in religious land use - the ways in which areas can (or cannot) be set aside for religious purposes.

Mauck was the architect of what became the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act, or RLUIPA (arrr-LOOpa), federal legislation passed in 2000 that enshrines certain aspects of religious freedom. In the wake of the Supreme Court striking down the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, RLUIPA remains the only robust set of protections at the federal level.

As Mauck tells the story, the hand of God was fully visible - to him and to others - in the legislative process. Mauck's account is heartfelt and fascinating, whether you are a believer or a skeptic.
