Pale Boys

So here is a demo of the next tune I plan to record.  This one has the string trio in it, as well as very large drums, bass, keys and harmony vocal. Production inspiration is coming from Peter Gabriel and Nine Inch Nails...

The lyrics come from a time when I was 18, pretending to be 21 so I could play a couple of bars in the 1979 pre-gentrified Central West End in St Louis. (Literally for steak and eggs at one place - playing the 1:00am to 4:00 am slot...)  Thinking "this is the life and wow, man, playing clubs!"

Mixed with memories of my outrageously flamboyant brother, who was known to say things like "My dear boy, unless .... you simply haven't lived..." and some of my friends. We were all mostly pale, indoorsy types.

If you know anyone who you think would like to see this come to life, please invite them in!

Pale Boys

Pale boys and cigarettes

Too old to know what they don’t know yet

The talk, the talk, the talkers and the do-ers

Not a one among ‘em knows what’s coming

Pale boys and cigarettes

Not afraid to mince a little bit

Freakin’ the mundanes with the “dear boy” shit

Not one among us knows what’s comin’

I love the swish, I love the swagger

The studied precision, the fumbling swagger

Feels like it’s all gonna last forever

When you’re nineteen

Were we ever that young? Ever that that pretty?

Stealing furtive kisses in the dark, dark city

No demons in the blood, no reason for pity

Not a one among us knows what’s coming

Pale boys and cigarettes

Dancing in the rubble in the shadow of death

Not living in the cross hairs, not quite yet

Not one among us knows what’s coming

Pale boys and cigarettes

All that desire and they don’t know yet

The talk, the talk, the talkers and the do-ers

Not a one among ‘em knows what’s coming

Pale boys and cigarettes…
