Picture book vs. Story book
I have been fascinated by the difference between picture books and story books since it was first described to me. Story books, which can be illustrated or not, are based on the text, and one can get a full appreciation for the story with or without illustrations. A Picture book, however, needs the illustrations for the story to be fully understood. A fantastic example of a picture book, which I discovered recently, is "This Is Not My Hat", by Jon Klassen. It won a Caldecott Medal in 2013, and it's a strong inspiration for me for future work. I've included a video of a reading, which is fun (aside from some cheesy music at the end!) and gives you a good idea of how the illustrations are necessary to the storyline. Enjoy!
