Progression - Liquid Steel
Here's the progression for my fan-art to Ky-nim's OC pokemon design, Vahirom. What I did: 1. line art: use the reference to figure out what are the defining features of the character. In this case, it was the yellow and cobalt blue highlights on its body. 2. Fill out the base colours. It's going to look real ugly but it gives you a starting point so you can colour from there. 3. Background. I find this really important for determining how to properly shade and highlight--it tells you what sort of contrast you need to use :O 4. Shade and highlight. Since Vahirom is firing molten steel and it's yellow and red, the highlight will be light yellow-orange. Adding darker colours right next to the highlights helps with the contrast (e.g. look at Vahirom's jaw--it's usually white/pale gray, but I made it dark bluish gray to contrast the molten metal). 5. Touch up the details. It might be completed by the end of step 4, but you can always refine it a bit--the little things sometimes makes a remarkable difference in the final piece.
