Real Life Welcome To The Zone Sketches: Commie Dick Tater
Many of the characters in WELCOME TO THE ZONE are based on people I knew in the New York music and poetry scenes during the 80s and 90s. Here are some drawings from my sketchbook of a few of them, paired with panels showing their WELCOME TO THE ZONE equivalents.

The singer known as George The Communist, or sometimes just The Communist, the model for Commie Dick Tater, was one of the Antifolk scene’s most eccentric performers. Always dressed in a suit, sometimes accessorized with a coonskin cap, The Communist sang songs like a straightforward tribute to Bob Dole with a seeming lack of irony. As far as can be determined, he never recorded, and the internet turns up no trace of him. No one seems to know what his real name was, and his present whereabouts are unknown.
