Real Life Welcome To The Zone Sketches: Folkie Joe McCoustic
Many of the characters in WELCOME TO THE ZONE are based on people I knew in the New York music and poetry scenes during the 80s and 90s. Here are some drawings from my sketchbook of a few of them, paired with panels showing their WELCOME TO THE ZONE equivalents.

Here are a couple of sketches of Roger Manning, the real-life model for  Folkie Joe McCoustic. Roger had a pronounced resemblance to Kirk  Douglas, down to the chin cleft, and for a while he sported a  Spartacus-style brush cut. Eventually Roger traded that hairdo in for a  half long/half crewcut. He never wore a reverse Mohawk- that haircut was my own touch of the ridiculous. Roger recorded several albums as well as recording his fellow performers at his home studio. Since 2001, Roger has made a living as a web designer in New York.
