Septic Savages is a 2D roguelike shooter where you are a submarine travelling through septic pipes blasting through levels and levels of baddies, collecting all manner of coins, gems, and items.
The game controlls fairly well, with full gamepad support. The movement seems a bit floaty but all deaths I have feel justified. Aiming with the gamepad is a bit finicky, but I don't often use gamepads, so I will let it pass.
The game has two base game types: arcade- where you are thrown into infinite randomely generated levels with a bit of progression thrown into to make it, and campaign- where there is a bit more order and some different level structure. In the game you will get two little modifiers that don't do much outside of lighting. Light(normal) levels, and Dark(night) levels.
The game also has craftable potions that are created via items you pick up through the game that are then used to craft one of multiple potions. The two most common potions to create are: the red potion- which fires a pinwheel of missiles around the player, and the blue potion- which adds one heart to one player, or two if there are two players. This helps add a lot of vairety to the game and is coupled with a large number of powerups. some of the powerups are pretty standard, like the tracking missiles powerup, but there are a view unique ones such as void, where you fire missiles that create a void that kills other enemies on contact. These powerups and potions are amazing and add large amounts of variety to the game.
The Enemies in the game are ok, but lack variety. This isnt improved by the combat which often involves shelling the enemies with missiles until they die. This is very similar with the bosses, where there isnt too much complexity and in my opinion could have been left out.
The art style is cute and well crafted, with quality cartoon style art. Personally my favorite thing about this art, is the paper mario esque image flipping when turning around. this is adorable and adds a nice touch to the game. The sound design is simple, but quality, and I enjoy the atmosphere it adds to the game. This is a bit reduced by the music, which is a bit repetitive but does not take too too much away from the game in my opinion. The game is very fun and earns a 7.5/ 10 with a label of "Charming"
